Leaving With Her Body

Ian pushed open the heavy glass door of La Belle Époque, the upscale French restaurant tucked into the bustling downtown district. The evening rush was in full swing. Crystal chandeliers cast warm golden light over white tablecloths, and the air hummed with laughter, clinking silverware, and the rich aroma of garlic butter and seared steak. Waiters in crisp black aprons weaved between tables like dancers.

He didn’t bother with the hostess stand. No need for a reservation tonight.

Hands in the pockets of his worn leather jacket, Ian drifted through the crowded dining room. His eyes scanned the faces—couples on awkward first dates, business partners sealing deals over wine, families celebrating birthdays. He moved slowly, deliberately, studying postures, expressions, the subtle tells of personality hidden beneath polite conversation.

In the far corner, near a large window overlooking the street, he found her.

She was about forty, elegantly dressed in a cream silk blouse and tailored navy slacks. Straight blond hair fell to her shoulders with neat, precise bangs framing a heart-shaped face. Her makeup was understated but flawless—soft rose lips, carefully lined eyes that held a quiet confidence. She sat alone, scrolling through her phone while occasionally sipping a glass of white wine. A half-eaten salad rested in front of her. Something about her poise, the calm self-assurance in her posture, called to him.

*Perfect.*

Ian stepped closer, stopping just behind her chair. No one paid him any mind. He closed his eyes for half a second, focusing.

Then it happened.

A sharp, electric jolt surged through him. His spirit tore free like a blade sliding from its sheath. In the space of a heartbeat, he was inside her—warmth, new sensations flooding in: the weight of breasts, the softer curve of hips, the faint scent of her vanilla perfume now *his* perfume. Her memories brushed against his mind like silk—successful marketing executive, recent divorce, weekend yoga classes—but he pushed them aside for now. Control settled quickly.

Behind him, his old male body crumpled to the hardwood floor with a heavy thud.

Gasps rippled through the restaurant. A woman shrieked. Chairs scraped back as diners turned toward the commotion.

“Oh my God, is he okay?”

“Call 911!”

“Someone help him!”

Ian (now *her*) rose smoothly from the table. He adjusted the blouse with unfamiliar fingers, smoothed the blond bangs, and glanced once over his shoulder. His former body lay sprawled awkwardly, face pale and slack, eyes staring blankly at the ceiling. A small crowd was already forming around it—waiters, concerned patrons, one man attempting clumsy CPR.

A faint smile touched his new lips.

He slipped the woman’s designer purse over his shoulder, left a generous tip in cash on the table, and walked calmly toward the exit. The heels felt strange at first, but he adapted within seconds, hips swaying naturally. As he passed the growing chaos, no one gave the blond woman a second glance. Why would they? She was simply another patron leaving while the drama unfolded.

The cool night air greeted him outside. Streetlights painted the sidewalk in amber. Ian paused for a moment, tilting his face upward, feeling the gentle breeze play through long blond hair.

He smiled wider, genuine pleasure blooming in his chest.

“Much better,” he murmured in her smooth, melodic voice.

Then, without looking back, Ian walked into the night, leaving his old life collapsed on the restaurant floor behind him.
